Runway sells trained video models and the GPUs that run them; the website around them is the easy part. An agent can wire an open model such as Wan 2.2 into a prompt box, a queue and a local gallery in a weekend, and the short clips are real, but expect slow renders without a large graphics card, none of Runway's Gen-4 look, and none of its editing tools. Build it for privacy and unlimited tries, not as a lookalike. If you make a few clips a month, Standard's $15 is cheaper than the card.
Before you buildRunway Free gives 125 credits once, about 25 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo video. Try your kind of clip there before you buy hardware.
Build me a local text-to-video studio to replace Runway for short clips. Requirements: - Python 3.11 with FastAPI and a single-page front end in vanilla JS (no build step). `python app.py` serves http://127.0.0.1:7880 and must not bind to any other interface. - Model: Wan2.2 TI2V-5B (`Wan-AI/Wan2.2-TI2V-5B-Diffusers`) through Hugging Face `diffusers`, in bfloat16 with model CPU offload. The weights download once into ./models/ and are reused offline after that. - Device: use CUDA when a GPU with at least 24 GB of VRAM is present. If not, stop with a clear message that says what was found, instead of falling back to a CPU that will take hours. - Generate page: prompt box, optional start image, size presets of 1280x704 and 704x1280, a length of 2 to 5 seconds at 24 fps, a seed field with a random option, and 1 to 4 clips per request. - A single worker with a queue: a second request waits and shows its position; a running job can be cancelled between denoising steps, and a crash leaves the queue intact. - Storage: sqlite3 in ./data/clips.db (prompt, seed, size, frames, model id, seconds taken, file path) with an FTS5 index on prompts. Clips are encoded to H.264 MP4 with ffmpeg into ./data/clips/YYYY-MM/ with the settings written into the file's metadata. - Gallery page: grid of looping previews, prompt search, favourite, delete (moves the file to ./data/trash/), and "reuse settings" to refill the form. - Test: the same prompt, seed and size give the same frame count, and a cancelled job leaves no half-written file. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first; the only outbound call is the first model download. - Out of scope: other models, LoRAs, upscaling, video-to-video, audio, editing and any attempt to copy Runway's look. - README: GPU and disk needs, the measured minutes per 5-second clip on this machine, and an honest note that results will not match Runway's Gen-4 models.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Runway.
Add batch generation to the video studio in this folder. Requirements: - A CSV upload with columns prompt, seed (optional), seconds and image_path (optional); show a preview of the parsed rows before queueing. - Each row becomes a queued job; a failed row is marked failed with its error and the rest continue. - A "stop after current" button and a progress bar for the batch. - Write the batch name into each clip's metadata and add a gallery filter for it. - Update the README with an example CSV.
Add clip continuation to the video studio in this folder. Requirements: - A "continue" button on a clip extracts its last frame with ffmpeg and opens the generate form with that frame as the start image and the old prompt prefilled. - Store the parent clip id; show the chain as a strip in the gallery. - A "join chain" button concatenates the clips in order into one MP4 with ffmpeg, without re-encoding when the codecs match. - Warn in the UI that drift builds up after a few links. - Update the README.
Add a small timeline editor to the video studio in this folder. Requirements: - Pick clips from the gallery, order them by drag and drop, and trim in and out points on each. - Optional audio track from a local file with a volume slider; fade in and out of 1 second. - Render with ffmpeg to ./data/exports/ as 1080p or 720p H.264 MP4 and show the progress. - Save the timeline as JSON in the database so it can be reopened. - Update the README with the ffmpeg command used.
A Runway clip arrives in the browser without a graphics card, drivers or model downloads, and the tools around it (editing, upscaling, voices) sit in one workspace. Reviewers on Trustpilot complain about the credits, though: failed or disappointing runs can use up a month's allowance quickly, so the headline number feels smaller in practice.
Estimate · Free on a GPU you own, apart from electricity. Renting one by the hour is the alternative, and a few hours of clips can cost more than Standard's $15, so only heavy use favours your own card. The build is token usage on your agent plan.

Free gives 125 credits once, which do not expire, a selection of generative models and 5 GB of storage.
Not really. The prompt on this page builds the closest honest substitute.
About $15 a month on the Standard plan, $180 a year (checked 2026-10-19).
Runway's own Gen-4 and Gen-4.5 models and the motion and prompt control they give; Fast renders without owning a large GPU, and several generations running in parallel; Aleph video editing, Act-Two performance capture and the browser video editor; Music, voices and sound effects in the same workspace; 4K upscaling and ProRes or HDR output. If any of those matter to you, keep paying.
