For one person, most Retool apps come down to a grid over a database table, a form that edits a row, a few saved queries with a chart, and a button that runs an update. An agent can build that as a generic admin panel over your own Postgres, MySQL or SQLite in one session, and for one specific tool it is often quicker still to ask for exactly that page. What you give up is the team side: a drag-and-drop builder non-developers can use, permissions, audit trails, workflows and maintained connectors. If you want a builder rather than code, Appsmith, ToolJet and Budibase can be self-hosted for free.
Before you buildRetool's own Free plan covers up to 5 users, so a solo builder may not need to pay at all; the paid plans start with staging environments, more workflow runs and permissions.
Build me a personal admin panel for my own databases to replace Retool. Requirements:
- Node.js 22 + TypeScript: a Fastify API and a React front end built with Vite.
`npm start` builds the UI and serves everything on http://127.0.0.1:4700.
- Connections come from .env as connection strings: Postgres (`pg`), MySQL
(`mysql2`) and SQLite (better-sqlite3), all queried through Kysely. A
connection marked READONLY=true refuses every write.
- On start, read each schema: tables, column types, primary and foreign keys.
Every table gets a page with a paginated grid (TanStack Table), sort, filter,
search and CSV export of the current view.
- Edit forms are generated from column types; foreign keys become searchable
dropdowns. Inserts, updates and deletes ask for confirmation and run in a
transaction.
- Saved queries: SQL files in ./tools/*.sql with {{named}} parameters, always bound
as real parameters, never pasted into the SQL string. Each becomes a page with
an input form, a result table and an optional line or bar chart (Recharts).
- Row actions: a button on a table page runs a saved query for the selected row
("mark order refunded") after showing the SQL with the values filled in.
- Append every write (time, connection, SQL, parameters, rows affected) to
./data/audit.jsonl.
- Single user, listening on 127.0.0.1 only. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first.
- Out of scope: drag-and-drop page building, multi-user permissions, workflows
and mobile apps.
- README: setup, how to add a connection and a saved query, and a warning to point
it at a read-only replica or a copy until you trust it.Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Retool.
Add dashboards to the admin panel in this folder. Requirements: - A dashboard is a YAML file in ./dashboards/ listing saved queries from ./tools/ and how to show each one: number, table, line chart or bar chart. - Render dashboards at /d/:name in a grid of cards, each with its own refresh button and last-updated time. - Optional auto-refresh interval per dashboard, never faster than 30 seconds. - Queries on a dashboard always run read-only, even on writable connections. - Update the README with an example dashboard file.
Add scheduled jobs to the admin panel in this folder. Requirements: - A job is a YAML file in ./jobs/: a cron expression (node-cron), a saved query from ./tools/, and what to do with the result: post JSON to a webhook URL, send an email through SMTP settings in .env, or do nothing if the result is empty. - A /jobs page lists jobs with their next run, last result and a Run now button. - Keep a log of the last 200 runs in ./data/jobs.jsonl with duration and errors. - Jobs that write to a database must name a connection without READONLY. - Out of scope: multi-step branching workflows. - Update the README.
Add REST API sources to the admin panel in this folder. Requirements:
- An API source is defined in .env: a base URL and an auth header value.
- Saved API calls live in ./tools/*.http files: method, path with {{named}}
parameters, optional JSON body.
- Each saved call gets a page like a saved query: an input form and the
response as a table when it is an array of objects, or as formatted JSON.
- Calls other than GET ask for confirmation and are written to ./data/audit.jsonl.
- Never log the auth header.
- Update the README with an example for a Stripe or GitHub token.Add an importer for Retool app exports to the admin panel in this folder. Requirements:
- A command that takes the path to a JSON file exported from a classic Retool app
(App actions > Export to JSON).
- Inspect the file's structure first and print every query it finds with its name,
resource name and SQL, before writing anything.
- Convert {{ }} references in the SQL into {{named}} parameters for this panel and
list the ones that pointed at components, so I can fix them by hand.
- Write each query to ./tools/<query-name>.sql and skip names that already exist.
- Update the README with the export steps and the import command.Companies pay because one engineer can ship tools that a whole support or finance team works in all day, with logins, permissions and an audit trail that security will approve. Once those teams run their day inside the apps, rewriting them as custom code is a project nobody wants to schedule.
Estimate · Runs on your machine against databases you already have, so there is nothing new to pay for. The build is token usage on your agent plan.
