A tracker for one person is a small app: projects, work items with states and labels, a board, cycles that are date ranges, and notes. A competent agent builds that in an evening. The weekend goes on what makes Plane a team tool: roles and guests, GitHub and Slack links, intake forms, workflows and a UI that stays fast with thousands of items. Plane's own Community Edition is also free to self-host, so a rebuild only pays off if you want a one-person tool you can read end to end.
Before you buildPlane Free already covers up to 12 users, and the Community Edition is free to self-host. Try those first: a rebuild wins only if you want a one-person tool you own completely.
Build me a single-user work tracker to replace Plane. Requirements: - Node.js 22 + TypeScript: a Fastify API and a React UI built with Vite. `npm start` serves everything on http://localhost:4820. - Storage: better-sqlite3 in ./data/tracker.db: projects (a key like WEB), work items (number per project, title, markdown description, state, priority, labels, estimate points, due date, parent item), cycles (name, start, end), modules, pages, and an activity log of every field change. - States are per project and editable (Backlog, Todo, In Progress, Done, Cancelled to start). Items get IDs like WEB-42, and typing an ID inside a description or page turns it into a link. - Views: a list and a kanban board with drag and drop (`@dnd-kit`), plus a cycle burndown chart (`recharts`). Saved filters on state, label, priority, cycle and text (SQLite FTS5). - Cycles: assign items, show progress by points, and a button that rolls unfinished items into the next cycle. Modules group items across cycles with a status. - Pages: markdown notes per project, linked from items, edited in a textarea with a live preview (`marked`). - Import: CSV with a column mapper, tried against a Jira export and a Linear export. Export everything to JSON, and each project to CSV. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first. Outbound calls: none. - Out of scope: roles and guests, integrations, webhooks, email intake, time tracking, AI features, a mobile app. - README: how to back up the .db file and which columns the importer expects.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Plane.
Extend the work tracker in this folder. Requirements: - Add POST /hooks/github that verifies X-Hub-Signature-256 against GITHUB_WEBHOOK_SECRET in .env. - Find item IDs such as WEB-42 in branch names, PR titles and PR bodies, and store each PR (URL, title, state) against the item. - Per project, choose the state an item moves to when a linked PR opens and when it merges. - Show linked PRs on the item page, and log every automatic move in the activity log. - Update the README with how to expose the endpoint through a tunnel.
Add email intake to the work tracker in this folder. Requirements: - Poll one IMAP mailbox with `imapflow` every 60 seconds; IMAP_HOST, IMAP_USER and IMAP_PASSWORD come from .env. - Each unread message from an address on an allow-list in settings becomes a Backlog item in the project named in the subject prefix (for example [WEB]); the body becomes the description. - Save attachments to ./data/files and link them from the item; mark the message read afterwards. - Never create the same item twice: key on the Message-ID header. - Update the README with app-password setup for Gmail and Fastmail.
Add recurring work items to the tracker in this folder. Requirements: - A recurrence rule per template item: daily, weekly on chosen days, monthly on a day number or the last weekday; use `rrule` and store the next run time. - A scheduler (`node-cron`) that, once a minute, creates due items as copies of the template with the due date set, and records the creation in the activity log. - A UI to pause, edit and delete a rule; show the next three run dates before saving. - Tests for month ends and the clock changes in both directions. - Update the README.
Add a weekly digest to the tracker in this folder. Requirements: - Every Monday at 08:00 local time, send one email through nodemailer (SMTP settings in .env) with: items completed last week, items due this week, and items untouched for 14 days. - Group by project, link each item to its page on APP_BASE_URL, and add a plain-text version. - A settings page to choose the day, the hour and which projects to include, plus a button that sends the digest now. - Update the README.
Teams pay for the shared layer: permissions, integrations with the tools around the code, intake from outside the team, and a hosted service with an SLA that someone else upgrades. A single person rarely needs those, which is why the free tier and the free self-hosted edition do most of the work for small teams.
Estimate · Runs on your laptop, or a $5 VPS if you want it reachable from elsewhere. No paid services are needed. The build is token usage on your agent plan.

Kinda. The core is a weekend build with the prompt on this page, but real gaps remain: Roles, guests and teamspaces for working with other people, GitHub, GitLab, Slack and Sentry integrations.
About $8 a month on the Pro plan per seat, $96 a year (checked 2026-10-19).
Roles, guests and teamspaces for working with other people; GitHub, GitLab, Slack and Sentry integrations; Intake forms and email-to-work-item; Workflows with approvals, automations and recurring work items; One-click importers for Jira, Linear, Asana and ClickUp, and the cloud AI credits and agents. If any of those matter to you, keep paying.
