The editing core is a canvas with layers, text, filters, crop presets and export, and open-source pieces cover the hard bits: Fabric.js for the canvas and rembg for cutouts. An agent can build that in a weekend and plug in an image API for generation. What stays behind is the content and the models under one bill: Getty stock, thousands of templates, video generation across many models and brand kits, plus the mobile app. Generation through your own API key is cheaper for light use and costs more than the plan for heavy use.
Before you buildPicsart has a free account, and GIMP, Krita and Photopea are free. If you only crop, retouch and add text, you may not need Pro at all.
Build me a personal photo and graphics editor to replace the editing side of Picsart. Requirements: - TypeScript with Vite + React and `fabric` (Fabric.js) for the canvas on http://localhost:4960 (`npm run dev`), plus a small Fastify server on :4961 for file, cutout and AI endpoints. - Canvas: open or drop JPG, PNG and WebP; layers for images, text, rectangles, circles and lines; move, scale, rotate, reorder, duplicate and lock; snap guides; 50 steps of undo and redo; zoom and pan. Load every .ttf and .woff2 in ./fonts; text supports outline, shadow and a background box. - Photo tools: crop with 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 and 16:9 presets; brightness, contrast, saturation, blur and sharpen as non-destructive filters; flip and rotate; a "cut out" button that posts the layer to `rembg s` (URL in .env) and adds the result as a new layer. - AI panel: calls an OpenAI-compatible /images/generations endpoint (IMAGE_API_BASE_URL, IMAGE_API_KEY, IMAGE_MODEL in .env) with prompt, size and count, adds results as layers, and logs a running cost in ./data/usage.json from IMAGE_PRICE_PER_IMAGE. - Projects autosave to ~/PicsartLocal/<name>.json with an assets/ folder. Templates are the same JSON files in ./templates and appear in a gallery; saving a project as a template is one click. - Export PNG, JPG or WebP at 1x, 2x or a custom size, with a transparent-background option. `npm run batch -- ./in --size 1080x1350` resizes and crops a folder using `sharp`. - Tests with `vitest`: layer operations, undo and redo, export dimensions and a template round trip. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first. Outbound calls: the image API you configure and rembg if it runs on another machine. - Out of scope: video editing, stock photo libraries, brand kits, collaboration, a mobile app. - README: starting `rembg s` (the first run downloads a model of a few hundred megabytes), the per-image cost of your image API, and a warning to keep Picsart until you have exported your old work.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Picsart.
Add a brand kit to the photo editor in this folder. Requirements: - A Brand panel that stores up to 8 colours, 2 fonts from ./fonts and one logo (PNG or SVG) in ./data/brand.json. - Colour swatches apply to selected fills and strokes; the logo button places it on the canvas at the last used corner and size. - `Apply brand` recolours a template: map its colours to the nearest brand colour and swap fonts, after showing a preview. - Add tests for colour mapping. Update the README.
Add an upscale tool to the photo editor in this folder. Requirements: - An Upscale button that runs `realesrgan-ncnn-vulkan` (path in .env) on the selected image layer at 2x or 4x and adds the result as a new layer; show a progress spinner and the elapsed time. - If the binary is missing, show where to download it and do nothing else. - Process one image at a time and refuse inputs over 4000 pixels on the long side. - Update the README with the model licence and hardware needs.
Add a slideshow export to the photo editor in this folder. Requirements: - Select several saved projects, set 2 to 8 seconds per slide and a 0.5 second crossfade, and export an MP4 with `ffmpeg` at 1080x1920 or 1920x1080. - Add a slow zoom on each slide and an optional audio file from disk, faded out at the end. - Show the ffmpeg command before it runs and write the file to ~/PicsartLocal/exports. - Update the README with the ffmpeg install step.
Picsart puts an editor people already know, templates, stock and credits for many AI models under one price, so a creator can go from a photo to a short video without juggling five tools. The editing tools are easy to copy. The content library and the model access are what the subscription buys.
Estimate · The editor and the cutouts run on your own machine for nothing. Image generation is billed per image by whichever API you choose; a few dollars a month covers occasional use (prices vary by model; not measured here). The build is token usage on your agent plan.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual, per month | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $15 | $10.50 | 500 credits a month, all photo and video editing features, advanced background and object removal, millions of stock photos and Getty clips, 3+ brand kits, bulk edit of up to 50 images, 100 GB of cloud storage, 15+ creative AI agents, the Picsart CLI and MCP access. |
| Ultra | custom | — | About five times Pro's credits, with a slider from 1,500 to 10,000+ a month, 200+ AI models, add-on credits that do not expire, 10+ brand kits, bulk edit of 100 images, ad variations and performance tracking, team seats and 300 GB of storage per seat. |
A free account exists; the pricing page lists only Pro and Ultra and says every plan includes standard photo and video editing tools, custom dimensions and a selection of templates, fonts, stickers and shapes.
Kinda. The core is a weekend build with the prompt on this page, but real gaps remain: Millions of stock photos and Getty video clips, and thousands of premium templates, Video editing and parallel AI video generation with models such as Seedance, Kling and Veo.
About $15 a month on the Pro plan, $180 a year (checked 2026-10-20).
Millions of stock photos and Getty video clips, and thousands of premium templates; Video editing and parallel AI video generation with models such as Seedance, Kling and Veo; Credits for many third-party models under one bill instead of separate API accounts; Brand kits, bulk editing and 100 GB of cloud storage; The phone app, where much of the editing happens. If any of those matter to you, keep paying.
Yes: GIMP (open source), Krita (open source), Penpot (open source).
