This is a service built on maintenance, so the verdict judges the software part only. Filling a broker's opt-out form is a script that hobby projects already run for a few dozen sites. The hard part is the long tail: hundreds of sites change forms without warning, many need an email confirmation, a CAPTCHA or a phone call, and a human agent handles the odd cases on the higher tiers. A script that sends your name and address to hundreds of sites also has to be something you trust. A realistic build is an assisted tracker that opens each form and pre-fills it while you click submit.
Before you buildOptery Free Basic gives you the exposure scan and self-service tools at no cost. Start there and see how many listings you have before deciding whether Core's $3.99 is worth it.
Build me an assisted data-broker opt-out tool to replace the do-it-yourself side of Optery. Requirements: - Python 3.12 with a Typer CLI `optout` and a FastAPI page on http://127.0.0.1:4970 showing the same data; storage is SQLite at ./data/optout.db through SQLAlchemy. - Brokers: `optout import brokers.csv` loads a CSV I download myself (columns name, site, opt_out_url, method, notes). The tool never scrapes a site or builds its own list. - Profile: ~/.optout/profile.json (chmod 600) with my names and aliases, an email alias, phone numbers, current and past addresses and birth year. It is never logged and never sent anywhere except into a form I submit myself. - Assisted run: `optout assist <broker>` opens the broker's opt-out URL in a visible Playwright Chromium window, fills the fields it recognises by label from my profile, then stops. I solve any CAPTCHA and press submit myself; closing the window asks me for the outcome. It only visits the domain in the CSV row. - Status per broker: todo, searched, found, request sent, email confirmation pending, confirmed removed, relisted, each with a date and a proof note. A pending confirmation raises a reminder after 3 days. - Recheck: `optout due` lists brokers whose next check is due, 90 days after confirmation by default, and builds search-engine URLs for my names and cities to open in my browser. - Report: counts by status, a table with a history per broker and a CSV export. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first. - Out of scope: solving CAPTCHAs, submitting forms unattended, scraping people-search sites, uploading ID documents. - README: budget a few hours for the first batch, expect listings to return, and mention California's DROP portal for residents. Say plainly that this saves typing, not the waiting and checking Optery sells.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Optery.
Add letter drafting to the opt-out tool in this folder. Requirements: - Templates in ./templates for a CCPA deletion request, a request under another US state law and a GDPR erasure request, with placeholders for my name, aliases and the listing URL. - `optout draft <broker>` fills the right template from the profile and writes an .eml file to ./drafts. It never sends mail itself. - Record each draft in the broker's history with a date. - Update the README with a short note on when each law applies.
Add a calendar feed to the opt-out tool in this folder. Requirements: - Serve /due.ics with one all-day event per broker whose recheck or confirmation reminder is due in the next 60 days, titled with the broker name and the action. - Protect it with a long random token in the URL stored in .env, and regenerate it with a command. - Events carry no personal details, only the broker name and status. - Update the README with how to subscribe from common calendar apps.
Add proof capture to the opt-out tool in this folder. Requirements: - In `optout assist`, add a key that saves a full-page screenshot of the current broker page to ./data/proofs/<broker>/<date>.png and attaches it to the history entry. - On the report page show screenshots next to each status change and a before and after pair for removals. - Blur nothing automatically; warn in the README that screenshots contain personal details and sit in an unencrypted folder. - Update the README.
The first round of opt-outs takes hours, listings can come back, and nobody enjoys repeating it every quarter. Optery's pitch is that someone else keeps checking, at a price low enough on Core that your own time looks more expensive. There's also a free tier to try the scan first.
Estimate · Everything runs on your machine with free tools. The real cost is your time on each opt-out. The build is token usage on your agent plan.
