Most days people open a PDF editor for page work, markup, filling a form, signing a contract or running OCR on a scan, and each of those has a free engine behind it. An agent can put them behind one local page in a weekend. The slow parts are the ones Nitro lists first: editing text on the page with the original fonts and reflowed paragraphs, and turning a PDF into Word, Excel or PowerPoint without wrecking the layout. Open-source tools get most of the way on clean files and stumble on scans and tables, so try your own documents before you cancel.
Before you buildNitro has no free plan, only a 14-day trial with no card. If page work is all you do, PDFsam Basic and Stirling-PDF are free and finished.
Build me a local PDF workbench to replace Nitro PDF for my own files. Requirements: - Python 3.12 + FastAPI serving one page on http://127.0.0.1:4850, with a viewer built on `pdfjs-dist` and plain JavaScript. `python -m workbench` starts it. - Storage: files stay where they are. Work happens on a copy in ./data/work/<id>/ with numbered versions for undo, and the original is not touched until I press Export. - Pages: a thumbnail sidebar with drag to reorder, rotate, delete, insert pages from another PDF, split by range or every N pages, and merge several files, all through `pikepdf`. - Markup: highlight, underline, strikethrough, sticky note, pen, rectangle and text box, saved as real PDF annotations (`pymupdf`) so Preview and Acrobat still show them. - Forms and signing: fill AcroForm fields, and place a signature image I save once in ./data/signature.png, plus date and initials stamps. - Redaction: draw boxes or search for a phrase. Applying removes the text and images underneath (`pymupdf` apply_redactions), then the app re-extracts the page text to confirm the phrase is gone. - OCR: a button that runs `ocrmypdf --skip-text` in a background job with a progress bar so scanned pages become searchable. - Convert: Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF with `soffice --headless`, PDF to Word the same way with a warning that layout fidelity is limited, and PDF to PNG per page. - Compare: two versions of a document side by side, with changed words highlighted by a text diff per page. - Other tools: compress (Ghostscript preset), password protect and unprotect (`qpdf`), page numbers, watermarks and Bates numbers. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first: nothing is uploaded anywhere. - Out of scope: editing existing body text with its original fonts, signature requests to other people, cloud storage, mobile apps, PDF/A and accessibility tagging. - README: installing Tesseract, Ghostscript, qpdf and LibreOffice, a short known-limits section, and a note that PyMuPDF is AGPL-3.0, which is fine for personal use.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Nitro PDF Pro.
Add limited text editing to the PDF workbench in this folder. Requirements: - Click a line of text in the viewer to edit it. The app finds the span with `pymupdf`, redacts the old text and writes the new text at the same position, size and colour. - Use the span's own font when it is embedded and licensed for reuse; otherwise fall back to the closest base-14 font and show a yellow "font substituted" badge on the edit. - Refuse edits that would overflow the line box by more than 10% and say so, instead of reflowing. - Keep every edit in the version history so it can be undone. - Update the README with a clear list of what this cannot do (paragraph reflow, scanned pages).
Add a watch folder to the PDF workbench in this folder. Requirements: - WATCH_DIR in .env is watched with `watchfiles`; each new PDF is copied to ./data/work, run through `ocrmypdf --skip-text --deskew`, and the result is written to OUT_DIR with the same name. - Wait until the file size stops changing for 3 seconds before starting. - Log each file with its page count, time taken and errors; failed files move to a failed/ folder. - A status page lists the last 50 jobs. - Update the README with how to run it as a login item or a systemd service.
Add table extraction to the PDF workbench in this folder. Requirements: - A "Tables" tool: draw a box on a page, or pick "find tables on this page", and extract the rows with `pdfplumber`; show the result in an editable grid before saving. - Export the grid as .xlsx (`openpyxl`) or CSV; multi-page tables can be appended into one sheet. - For scanned pages, run OCR first and warn that numbers need checking by eye. - Update the README with the cases that work and the ones that do not.
Add batch form filling to the PDF workbench in this folder. Requirements: - Pick an AcroForm PDF and a CSV; the app lists the form's field names next to the CSV columns and lets me map them, including checkboxes and dropdowns. - Write one filled, flattened PDF per row to a chosen folder, named from a column I pick, with a preview of the first three before it runs. - Skip rows with missing required fields and list them at the end. - Update the README.
Nitro sells the Acrobat feature list for less, in an Office-style interface people already know, with an admin portal and round-the-clock support for teams. Reviewers praise the price and the familiar layout; the complaints cluster around OCR on large files, documents that resist editing and the odd crash.
Estimate · Runs on your own machine with no running cost. The build is token usage on your agent plan.

Kinda. The core is a weekend build with the prompt on this page, but real gaps remain: Editing existing text and images with matching fonts and paragraph reflow, PDF-to-Word, Excel and PowerPoint conversion that keeps complex layouts intact.
About $15 a month on the Nitro PDF Standard plan per seat, $180 a year (checked 2026-10-19).
Editing existing text and images with matching fonts and paragraph reflow; PDF-to-Word, Excel and PowerPoint conversion that keeps complex layouts intact; Native Windows, Mac and iOS apps, and the Microsoft 365 add-ins; Nitro Sign: signature requests to other people, tracking and audit trails; PDF/A conversion, accessibility tagging and certificate signatures. If any of those matter to you, keep paying.
