The budgeting half of Monarch fits in a local app in one sitting: accounts, transactions, categories with rules, monthly budgets, net worth over time and a few reports. The paid half is the connection to 13,000+ banks, cards and brokerages, and a prompt can't reproduce that. A cheap aggregator exists: SimpleFIN Bridge costs $15 a year and Actual Budget already uses it, but it refreshes about once a day and pulls 90 days at a time. Without it you have a ledger fed by downloaded files, and you lose the thing most people pay for, transactions that simply arrive.
Before you buildMonarch has no free plan, only a 7-day trial. If you would rather not build, Actual Budget is free to self-host and already syncs through SimpleFIN.
Build me a personal budgeting and net-worth tracker to replace Monarch Money. Requirements: - Node.js 22 + TypeScript: a Fastify API and a React front end built with Vite. `npm start` serves http://127.0.0.1:4840 only. - Storage: better-sqlite3 in ./data/money.db. Money is integer cents and every write runs in a transaction. Tables: accounts (type, institution, currency), balance snapshots (one row per account per day), transactions (date, amount, merchant, category, notes, tags), categories with groups, rules and budgets. - Import: CSV (`papaparse`) and OFX/QFX (`ofx-js`) with a column mapping saved per account and duplicate detection by FITID, or by date + amount + merchant. Add a preset for Monarch's own transactions CSV and balance-history CSV, and read the header row of a real export rather than guessing column names. - Optional bank sync: when SIMPLEFIN_ACCESS_URL is set in .env, a nightly job pulls accounts and the last 90 days of transactions from SimpleFIN Bridge, inserts the new rows and records a balance snapshot. Without it the app works fully on imported files. - Rules: "merchant contains X, amount between A and B" sets a category, renames the merchant or adds a tag. A "re-run rules" button shows how many rows would change before it applies anything. - Budget: a monthly amount per category group with spent, remaining and a rollover switch; a month view with progress bars and an overspent list. - Net worth: a line chart of balance snapshots with assets and liabilities apart; manual accounts (home, car, loan) editable by hand. - Reports with Recharts: cash flow by month, spending by category with a click-through to the transactions, and recurring charges found from merchants that repeat monthly or yearly. - Single user. No accounts, no telemetry, local-first. Outbound calls: SimpleFIN only, and only if configured. - Out of scope: Plaid, investment holdings, receipts, sharing with a partner, mobile apps, AI chat. - README: setup, the .env keys, how to export the CSVs from Monarch, how to back up ./data, and a warning that the SimpleFIN access URL is a credential to keep out of git.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own Monarch Money.
Add a Monarch importer to the budgeting app in this folder. Requirements: - A command `money import-monarch --transactions <csv> --balances <csv>` for the two files Monarch exports (transactions from Settings > Data, balances from the Accounts tab). - Read each header row, print the mapping chosen and stop on any column it cannot place. - Create accounts and categories that do not exist yet, keep Monarch's category names, and keep tags and notes. Skip rows already present by date + amount + merchant + account. - `--dry-run` is the default and prints counts of new, skipped and unmatched rows; `--apply` writes. Running it twice must change nothing. - Update the README with the export steps and the 5,000-row guidance for long histories.
Add recurring-charge tracking to the budgeting app in this folder. Requirements: - Detect merchants charged at a steady interval (weekly, monthly, yearly) within 3 days and 10% of the amount, show them on a Recurring page with next expected date and yearly cost. - Let me confirm, rename or dismiss each one; confirmed items stay even if a charge is skipped. - A daily job emails through nodemailer SMTP a list of charges expected in the next 5 days, and flags any charge that rose by more than 10%. - Update the README with the SMTP keys.
Add a monthly summary to the budgeting app in this folder. Requirements: - On the first day of each month a job (`node-cron`) builds a plain HTML email: spending by category against budget, the five biggest transactions, net-worth change and any overspent groups. - Send it through nodemailer SMTP from .env; a `money summary --month YYYY-MM --print` command prints it without sending. - Use no remote images or trackers; all numbers come from the local database. - Update the README.
Linking accounts is the chore Monarch removes: transactions show up already categorised, balances stay current and a partner sees the same numbers. Its own pitch is that members, not advertisers, fund it, which matters to people who tried free tools that sold attention or left them importing files by hand.
Estimate · Runs on your own machine. SimpleFIN Bridge is the only running cost, $15 a year if you want bank sync. The build is token usage on your agent plan.
