iLovePDF is a drawer of single-purpose PDF tools, and nearly every drawer is one call into an open-source engine: qpdf, Ghostscript, OCRmyPDF, LibreOffice, pikepdf. An agent wires them into a local web page in one sitting, and your files never leave your machine. What you give up is polish on the hard conversions, such as PDF to Word with layouts intact, plus the AI summary and translation, redaction and comparison tools, and the apps.
Before you buildiLovePDF Free already handles single-file tasks within its size caps, and students and academics can get a year of Premium for free. Build only if you hit the batch limits or don't want to upload documents.
Build me a local PDF toolbox to replace iLovePDF Premium. Requirements: - Python 3.12: FastAPI with Jinja2 pages and a little vanilla JS on http://127.0.0.1:5300, started with `uvicorn app:app`. Each tool is a card on the home page: choose files, set options, download. - Jobs: every upload goes to its own temp folder, runs in a worker process with a 5-minute timeout, and is deleted after download or after 30 minutes. At most 2 jobs run at once, uploads are capped at 500 MB, and a file that doesn't start with %PDF is refused unless the tool takes images or Office files. - Page tools with `pikepdf`: merge (reorder the files by dragging), split by ranges or every N pages, extract, delete, rotate and reorder pages from thumbnails made by `pdf2image`; add page numbers and a text watermark with a `reportlab` overlay; crop margins. - Optimise: compress with Ghostscript (/screen, /ebook and /printer presets) and show the size before and after; repair by rewriting through `qpdf`; best-effort PDF/A-2b through Ghostscript. - Convert: OCR with `ocrmypdf` and a language picker, PDF to JPG, JPG and PNG to PDF with `img2pdf`, Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF with headless LibreOffice, and PDF to Word with `pdf2docx`, saying on the page that complex layouts will not survive. - Protect and sign: AES-256 password protect and unlock with `pikepdf`, the password typed in the page and never logged; place a drawn, typed or uploaded signature image at a chosen spot on a page. - Workflows: save a chain of up to 5 tools (for example merge, compress, watermark) as JSON in ./data/workflows.json and run it on a new upload with one click. - No accounts, no telemetry, local-first: nothing leaves the machine and nothing is kept after download. - Out of scope: AI summary and translation, redact and compare, signature requests to other people, editing existing text, a phone app. - README: install lines for qpdf, Ghostscript, Poppler, Tesseract, ocrmypdf and LibreOffice on macOS (Homebrew) and Debian or Ubuntu (apt), and a note that Ghostscript is AGPL-licensed.
Opens your agent with the prompt filled in, you press enter. Or copy it and paste it into an empty folder.
The first prompt builds the core. Run these one at a time in the same folder to grow it into your own iLovePDF Premium.
Add a hot folder to the PDF toolbox in this folder. Requirements: - A config file maps folders under ~/PDFBox/ to a saved workflow, such as ~/PDFBox/compress and ~/PDFBox/scan-to-text. - Watch them with `watchfiles`; when a PDF has stopped changing for 3 seconds, run the workflow and write the result to a sibling `done/` folder. - Move failures to `failed/` with a .txt file holding the engine's stderr. - Never process the same file twice; keep a small SQLite log of runs. - Update the README with how to start it at login.
Add a compare tool to the PDF toolbox in this folder. Requirements: - Upload two PDFs; extract text per page with `pdfplumber` and diff it with `difflib` at the word level. - Show added and removed words side by side by page in the browser, with a summary count. - Say clearly that scanned PDFs need the OCR tool first and that layout-only changes are not detected. - Export the diff as a standalone HTML file. - Update the README.
Add a redaction tool to the PDF toolbox in this folder. Requirements: - Draw rectangles on a page preview or search for terms and regular expressions. - Use PyMuPDF's redaction API to remove the text and images under each rectangle, then re-read the file and fail loudly if any redacted term is still extractable. - Strip metadata and previous revisions from the output. - Mention in the README that PyMuPDF is AGPL-licensed. - Update the README.
Most people arrive with one file that needs fixing and stay because every tool sits in the same place on any device. The free tier's batch and size caps are the nudge: merging 40 scans or compressing a large file is where the paid plan starts to pay.
